Gallatin
The Gallatin School of Individualized Study, a small, experimental college within New York University, gives students the opportunity to design a program of study tailored to their own needs and interests. When students choose Gallatin, they take on the exciting challenge of creating their own curriculum and unique plan for learning. They pursue their individual interests from a personal perspective by taking courses in the various schools of New York University, engaging in self-directed education through independent studies and participating in experiential learning through internships at New York City's countless institutions, businesses and arts organizations.
Gallatin students are unique in that they don't quite fit into one particular genre. They may not know what they want to do because they want to do everything, or they may want to do something very specific but across multiple disciplines. A "typical" college education would not allow these individuals to delve into their interests head on.
This is why Gallatin offers its students the chance to create their own concentrations in whatever field(s) they want. The only catch is that, in order to graduate, every student must hold a colloquium–a 2-hour intellectual conversation with 3 faculty members of the students' choice. The colloquium provides an opportunity for students to reflect on their Gallatin "major" and to synthesize their various learning experiences into an integrated discussion that is focused on 20-25 books and themes that have been central to his or her undergraduate education.
